Overview

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a surgical procedure done to fill the gap of a missing tooth. It involves surgically drilling an implant body (which could either be titanium or a ceramic-like material called zirconia) into the jawbone; this serves as the artificial root, and then it is left for some time to fuse with the tissues of the bone to firmly secure it in place. After this, a connecting device called an abutment is placed over the implant. This abutment connects the implant to the crown (artificial teeth). The crown is made and customized to look and function like natural teeth.

The procedure

What Are The Stages of Dental Implant?

Dental implant treatment takes place over two visits, with a healing period in between.

  1. First visit — days 1 to 3: On day one, any failing teeth are removed, the implants are placed under local anaesthetic and fully digital impressions are taken. On day two or three, your temporary teeth are fitted.
  2. Osseointegration — 3 to 6 months: This is the healing stage, at home. The tissues of your jawbone integrate with the titanium implants to firmly secure them in place, while we check in with you remotely.
  3. Second visit — days 1 to 6: On day one, final impressions are taken. On day two or three, you approve a try-in of the trial teeth for shape and bite. On day five or six, your fixed zirconium teeth are fitted on a titanium bar.

Types

Types of Dental Implant

There are two common types of dental implants:

  • Endosteal: This type of dental implant is the most frequently used. It requires that you have sufficient bone in your jaw, which can anchor the implant. The implant body, which usually looks like a screw, cylinder, or blade, is inserted surgically within the jawbone, and an abutment is placed over it, which connects the crown to it.
  • Subperiosteal: In this type of dental implant, the implant body is surgically inserted on top of the jawbone but below the gum tissue. After the tissues of the bone are integrated with the implant body, then the abutment is placed over it, which connects the crown to it. This type of dental implant is mostly used for patients with insufficient jawbones. They undergo bone graft procedures to support the implant.

Other types of dental implants based on the location of the bone the implant is inserted include:

  • Zygomatic implants: They are placed into the zygomatic bone (cheekbone). These are often used in individuals with insufficient upper jaw bone.
  • Alveolar implants: These are placed on the alveolar bone around the socket of the teeth.
  • Pterygoid implants: These types of implants are inserted into the pterygoid bone.
  • Basal implants: For these types of implants, they are placed into the cortical bone at the base of the jawbone.

Based on teeth coverage, we have:

  • Full mouth implant: This is also known as a full arch implant. Sets of implants, usually between 8 to 10 per jaw are inserted into the jawbone, and prosthetic teeth are placed on them. It is used in people who have lost all or most of their teeth.
  • All-on-4 implant: This is also used in people who have lost most or all of their teeth. Four dental implants are placed into the jawbone per jaw to support all the prosthetic teeth that will be placed.
Also available

Full-arch options when more than one tooth is missing.

Procedure

What Does the Dental Implant Procedure Look Like?

If you are planning on doing a dental implant, the procedure for it involves the following processes:

  • Consultation with your dentist or dental surgeon: Discuss things you should know about dental implants, and talk about the various options there are and the one that best suits you. Also, evaluation of your oral health, performing oral examinations including x-rays to observe the condition of your jawbone.
  • Bone grafting: If you do not have sufficient bone in your jaw, bone grafting is required.
  • Placement of the Dental Implant: During this process, you may be given anaesthesia to control the pain. Your dental surgeon cuts open your gum and drills the implant deep within your jawbone.
  • Osseointegration: After placing the dental implant, a process called osseointegration occurs. In this process, the tissues of the bone integrate or fuse with the implant, securing it firmly in place. This process takes about three to six months, and in some cases, it takes more than six months.
  • Placement of the Abutment: The abutment is a connecting piece that binds the implant to the artificial teeth. After the dental implant is integrated with your bone, the abutment is attached to it. This may require a minor surgery. The gum is left for about two weeks to heal, then the crown is placed on it.
  • Placement of the Crown: After the abutment is attached to the implant, the next step is to place your crown or artificial teeth on it. To make the artificial teeth, you will be given a mould to bite into to make an impression of your teeth. This impression will then be used to produce your artificial teeth. You may decide to choose artificial teeth that are replaceable, irreplaceable (fixed), or a mixture of both.
Bone grafting

What is Bone Grafting?

If you do not have sufficient bone in your jaw, it can affect the success of the implant. Bone grafting can help to address this issue. It is a surgical procedure that involves transplanting bone tissues or substitutes to rebuild or repair bone loss. The bone tissues used could be;

  • Allograft: Donated from a bone tissue bank.
  • Autograft: Taken from any part of your body.
  • Xenograft: Derived from animal bones.
  • Synthetic graft: Made in the laboratory.
Specialists

Which Specialists Are Required for Dental Implants?

Dental implant surgery is not a surgery that can be performed by only one specialist; it requires the specialists listed below.

  • An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon: A dental specialist who focuses on oral and maxillofacial surgery - surgery relating to the jaw.
  • A Periodontist: A dental specialist who focuses on and treats diseases in the gum and jawbone.
  • A Prosthodontist: A dental specialist who focuses on tooth replacement.
Advantages

What Are the Advantages of Dental Implants?

Dental implants provide a lot of benefits, some of which are;

  • Durability and longevity: Dental implants are highly durable, can last for a long time, about ten to thirty years, and if properly taken care of, may last for a lifetime.
  • Dental implants are made to look, feel, appear and function like natural human teeth.
  • They are strong and can withstand wear and tear.
  • They do not need filling or shaping.
  • Dental implants can enhance the quality of life.
  • They can restore the ability to bite and chew.
  • They can also restore the ability to talk.
  • They prevent bone loss.
  • They preserve and protect jawbone tissues.
  • They can improve or enhance your physical appearance.
Disadvantages

What Are The Disadvantages of Dental Implants?

Although a dental implant is a very useful way to replace tooth loss, it has its own disadvantages. Some of them are;

  • Cost: It is more expensive than other tooth-replacement options — though in Turkey the same treatment is far more accessible.
  • It is a surgical procedure; in inexperienced hands there are risks such as inflammation of the gum, infection or nerve damage. That is why implants should only be placed by specialist, experienced surgeons.
  • The full process takes time: after the implants are placed, the bone needs three to six months to heal before the final teeth are fitted.
Complications

What Are Complications That May Arise From Dental Implants?

In any surgery, there is a likelihood of risks of complications. Dental implants are no different; some complications arise from them as well.

  • Nerve damage
  • Damage to the adjacent teeth, the nearby tissues, and blood vessels during placement of the dental implant
  • Gum bleeding
  • Sinus damage
  • Fracture of the implant
  • Fracture of the jawbone
  • Gum infection
  • Infection of the implant
  • Implant failure
  • Allergic reactions either to the titanium implant or the anaesthesia. Although allergic reactions are usually rare.
Aftercare

How to Care for My Dental Implant

To ensure the longevity of your dental implant, it is sacrosanct that you care for it as you would your natural teeth. Here are a few tips on how to care for and maintain your dental implant:

  • Maintaining good oral hygiene: Keep your gums and teeth clean by brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day.
  • Toothbrush: Use a soft toothbrush, such as an interdental brush, to clean your teeth.
  • Avoid chewing hard food materials.
  • Avoid caffeine products.
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking can hinder the success rate of dental implants, increasing the risk of implant failure.
  • Ensure you do not miss your dental checkups. You should have at least two dental checkups in a year.
Candidates

Candidates for Dental Implant

How do I know if I am suitable for dental implant surgery? A consultation with your dentist will provide the ultimate answer to this. However, here are a few pointers that make you an ideal candidate:

  • If you have tooth loss and you want to replace it.
  • If you possess a well-developed jawbone.
  • If you possess sufficient bone in your jaw, which can anchor the implant.
  • If you do not have enough jawbone you are eligible for a bone graft.
  • If you do not have certain health issues such as diabetes, periodontal disease, etc., which may affect the success of the surgical process

My mother had dental implants done at this clinic, and we are very satisfied with the experience. We specifically sent her from the United States to Turkey for dental treatment because the prices are much more affordable, and it was absolutely worth it. The service was excellent, the clinic is modern and very clean, and the doctors were very attentive and caring. They explained everything clearly, took their time, and treated my mother with great respect and patience. The entire process was well organized, and we felt supported at every step. We truly appreciated the professionalism and warm attitude of the medical staff. We would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone considering dental implants or other dental treatments

After a long search for a dentist to place crowns on my implants, I found it nearly impossible in the Netherlands. Either it wasn’t an option, or the prices were extremely high. While searching online, I came across Denthouse, which has clinics in both Istanbul and Rotterdam. From the very first contact via WhatsApp with Meryem, I was guided perfectly. She took the time to explain everything clearly and gave me confidence in the process. In the end, I chose to have my treatment at Denthouse, and I can say with full satisfaction that both the clinic in Rotterdam and the one in Istanbul exceeded my expectations. The professionalism, care, and attention to patients were truly impressive. Thanks to Denthouse and Meryem, I finally have a complete smile again, and I couldn’t be happier. I highly recommend this clinic!
